Face-to-face with our idea potentially becoming a reality, I unconsciously began pacing back and forth, nervously muttering to myself behind Diane as she feverishly typed away. Ever the consummate optimist and having little doubts that this sucker was gonna cruise to the stars, she would intermittently shout out while shaking her head back and forth, "Get a grip Hun, this is gonna be awesome!"
Reminding myself over and again that "history only remembers those who persist and succeed," we pressed on throughout the night and by the early reaches of the morning had managed through not only two bottles of red wine, but a draft proposal that even I thought wasn't half bad.
In it we detailed the hours of operation and the specifics of the removable playing surfaceâwhich consisted of a dozen large coils of artificial turf that could be rolled out, velcroed together at the seams and then reversed for removalânot forgetting, of course, the terms of a ten-year lease and special request for a bargain-basement rental rateâas in all likelihood, that despite whatever we told ourselves, this hair-brained scheme had a decent chance of tanking right from the get-go!
With a sample piece of artificial turf sent from our contact in Georgia, the epicenter of carpet manufacturing for all of North America, and our offer in triplicate, we set off that that following Wednesday with Diane in heels and me in jacket and tie to meet with the Agricultural Society's board of directors.
They just loved it! In fact, the vote was unanimously in favour of having indoor soccer fill the arena during the fall and winter months. Effectively attracting not only people and revenue to the Agricultural Center, but also providing the community with an invaluable recreational resource. And before you could say, "Oh boy, now we're in it up to our eyeballs," we were heading back home wondering, what the hell had we just gotten ourselves into.
Fully understanding that wanting something and actually having it are two entirely different creatures, I soon found myself treading about the house wringing my hands and incessantly worrying that we were way in over our heads. I mean not only had I put the two of us on the hook for a ten year commercial lease and a quarter of a million dollarsâ worth of plastic grass, but my in-laws as well, of whom we had to borrow ten percent of that amount just to begin production!
Thank goodness for Diane's unshakable nerve and unwavering belief that this was our ticket out of poverty, which decisively kept me from backpedaling us out of an opportunity that would soon prove to become even more than we had ever hoped for.
Throughout the spring and summer months we diligently began preparing for our grand opening in September. While Diane and the kids were busy painting road signs and designing flyers for distribution in the schools, I was meeting with soccer club officials regarding rental space and canvasing the outdoor adult leagues to extoll the virtues of playing at the new and larger indoor facility.
